Veterinary Research and Teaching Hospital
The Veterinary Research and Teaching Hospital (VRTH) has been officially opened in 1998. In fact this hospital was previously located in Tehran (named Vasfenard Veterinary Clinic) since the opening of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1934.
The VRTH is located in 35 km west of Tehran in Mahdasht Road in south of Karaj.

The VRTH belonges to the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, and includes the following teaching sections for training the undergraduate and postgraduate students:
1- Section of Large Animal Internal Medicine

This section includes four laboratories:
5A- Virology Laboratory

There are three Research Laboratories including:
1- Leptospira Research Laboratory
Leptospira research laboratory has been officially opened in 1999, by funding of Tehran University and the help of WHO/FAO Collaborating Center for Reference & Research on Leptospirosis, and Professor W. A. Ellis. Since then many research projects covering different aspects of Leptospirosis have been carried out in this Laboratory.
The main prospect of this laboratory is to investigate the current situation of leptospirosis in Iran and provide materials such as specific culture media, standard antiserum against reference strain of Leptospira, diagnostic kits and technical support for Iranian researchers to pursue their research in this field.
At the present two postgraduates students and two graduate students are conducting their thesis research projects in this Laboratory under supervision of Dr G Abdollahpour.
1) Identification of leptospira isolated from animals in Iran using REA technique.
2) Comparison of three techniques to detect leptospira interrogans in urine samples.
3) Sero-epidemiological study of human and bovine leptospirosis in North of Iran.
4) Sero-Bacteriolocal survey of Leptospirosis in infected dairy herd in Tehran suburbs
5) Characterization of leptospires cause acute human leptospirosis isolated from patient referred to hospitals of Gilan Medical Science University by PCR
6) Study of leptospirosis in shepherd dogs in Tehran Province of Iran. (DVM Thesis)
7) Sero-epidemiological study of leptospirosis in camel in Qum Province of Iran. (DVM Thesis)
8) Study of leptospirosis in slaughterhouse's employees in Kurdistan Province of Iran
9) Study of leptospirosis in suspected cases in Mazandaran Province of Iran (Research project).
10) Seroepidemiological study of Leptospirosis in dairy farms in Sabzevar area in Iran.(DVM Thesis).
2- IVF Laboratory
3- Poultry Diseases Research Laboratory.
Ambulatory services is also available for the farmers to bring their sick animals to the VRTH
There is also a small dairy farm and 20 horses for teaching purposes inside the VRTH.
